Ed's early college basketball ratings

Ed Weiland has come a long way from just being known as the uncle of Daily News staff writer Nikki Younk and classmate of 1978 Norway grad Pete (The Wizard) Frecchio.

Weiland garnered national attention — see the Saturday, Aug. 4, Daily News sports section — for predicting NBA stardom for Jeremy Lin.

Weiland, a FedEx delivery truck driver who loves living in Oregon, doesn’t see himself joining an NBA front office. “I really don’t know where to go from here,” Weiland said. “I’m pretty happy as it is.”

“If the point guard class of 2013 is a little weak, the returning shooting guard class looks downright anemic,” Weiland wrote. “I expect this to change. I expect an upper classmen or three will emerge out of nowhere. I also feel one or two freshmen will sparkle, as usually is the case.”

Weiland ranks Michigan’s Trey Burke among the nation’s top point guards. Nobody from Michigan State or Wisconsin mentioned in the top 10 ...
