Soccer brings out friendship

September 5, 2012 - Burt Angeli
The term “friendly rivals” seems to fit high school boys soccer.

Iron Mountain defeated Marquette on penalty kicks 5-4 to prevail Tuesday at Commemorative Field. Many of the Mountaineers along with Marquette senior Billy Mullett play on the same Northern Stars team.

“I look forward to playing Marquette,” said Mountaineer coach Rob Bogaudo, noting Mullett and other Marquette players with the Northern Stars program. “Billy Mullett is an incredible player.

“We not only enjoy competing with that team but we’re friends with that team. We have friends on that team, same with Kingsford.”

Iron Mountain (4-1-1) and Kingsford (2-1-2) square off at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at Commemorative Field.

“We don’t play soccer to crush people’s will,” Bogaudo said. “We play soccer because we love the game.

“I teach the kids that at practice: Leave every single ounce of energy that you have on the field. After that you’re friends.”
