Stephenson defense No. 1; Saint Ignace to challenge

September 17, 2012 - Burt Angeli
The 2002 Stephenson Eagles limited football foes to 28 points in 10 games for a 2.8 average.

Th 2012 St. Ignace Saints are out to break that mark.

Peter Pietrangelo of The Evening News, examining points allowed since the playoff expansion in 1999, reports the Saints are on their way after four games.

St. Ignace shut out its first three opponents — one a 2-0 forfeit with Rudyard — before beating Inland Lakes 58-6 last weekend. The 2002 Eagles blanked seven opponents. They downed West Iron County 12-6 in the regular season but lost to Norway in the playoffs, 10-9.

According to Pietrangelo’s study, none of the Iron Mountain area teams made the top 10. The list follows:

1. Stephenson, 2002, 28 points allowed, 2.8.

2. Menominee, 2006, 44, 3.1.

3. Bark River-Harris, 2002, 45, 4.1.

4. Lake Linden, 2009, 60, 6.0.*

5. Cedarville, 2008, 73, 6.6.

6. Bark River-Harris, 2003, 84, 6.5.

7. Ishpeming, 2006, 78, 7.1.

8. Stephenson, 2003, 90, 7.5.

9. Lake Linden, 2010, 75, 7.5.*

10. Negaunee, 2003, 102, 7.8.

(* Lake Linden-Hubbell picked up forfeit wins in 2010 and 2009. Those games are not counted in the average calculation)
