Awrey forming great coaching staff

January 22, 2013 - Burt Angeli
Iron Mountain’s Randy Awrey is already assembling a first-rate coaching staff at Concordia University Chicago in River Forest, Ill.

Jim Kiernan, offensive coordinator during Awrey’s great years at Saginaw Valley, will handle that role with the Cougars along with coaching quarterbacks. While at Saginaw Valley, they led the team to two conference championships, five NCAA II playoff appearances and a number one ranking in the 2003 season.

“Randy is my extended family,” said Kiernan, who also coached with Awrey at St. Lawrence, Kentucky Wesleyan and Lakeland College.

Awrey’s “real” family will also be part of Concordia. Nicky Awrey, coming off leg problems, will be able to transfer from Marietta (Ohio) College and play his senior season with dad. Tony Awrey, presently wide receivers coach at Olivet College, will join the Concordia staff in the future.

Randy Awrey, defensive coordinator last season at Marietta, worked with a very young group in one of the country’s best conferences. Marietta brought in 85 true freshmen, with five to six starting at times.

Marietta head coach Jeff Filkovski, who was dismissed after last season, and Awrey believed they would have time to allow the young freshmen class to grow up. Administration had other ideas.
