A really bad sinus infection

July 27, 2009 - Lisa Reed
As if I didn’t get sick enough with a terrible head cold twice this past winter, I managed to get a sinus infection this summer. Not just any sinus infection - a really bad one. My head hurt so bad I couldn’t focus, using cold or warm compresses did not help, my sleep was interrupted by the constant pain in my head, and Over The Counter (OTC) pain medicines didn’t do anything for the pain. So after a few days of the constant head pain, I called into work sick and seen the doctor that day. She diagnosed me with sphenoid sinusitis, a sinus infection of the butterfly gland behind your eyes, and prescribed an antibiotic and two pain medicines. The pain medicines were cheap and the antibiotic, with insurance, was $75 for 10 days. So I paid the outrageous price for the antibiotic because I needed it to kick the sinus infection. And then I took the antibiotic and the pain medicine as directed. Now I have heard antibiotics cost more and are less effective than in the past, I just didn’t think they would cost as much as they did. While I was taking the antibiotic and pain medicine, the pain in my head somewhat went away. When I was done taking the medication, the pain in my head came back. I have heard this type of sinus infection is so bad that it feels like a brain aneurysm or tumor. I have also heard the pain referred to as “my head feels like cement.” The pain can also be described as a constant “ice cream headache,” the kind you get when you eat ice cream too fast; but it doesn’t go away. Noises and lights are bothersome - not like a migraine, but more like a constant pressure headache. You almost feel like your head is going to explode! So I called the doctor who ended up putting me on a second round of antibiotics, which didn’t cost as much, and a nasal spray because she thinks whatever I have might be a lingering sinus infection and allergies. I am hoping the infection is completely gone by the end of this week.
