Scuttle leftovers, June 15, 2013

June 14, 2013 - Burt Angeli
ScuttleBu(r)t ...

Aaron Rodgers (quarterback), Adrian Peterson (running back) and Calvin Johnson (wide receiver) topped the New York Times’ fantasy football preseason rankings ...

From the Must-watch TV Dept: BBC America’s “Copper” returns Sunday, June 23, and HBO’s “The Newsroom” on Sunday, July 14 ...

My boys in Las Vegas have set the NFL opening week betting lines. Not sure about the 49ers giving 5 points to the Packers and the Lions by 2 and a hook over the Vikings, but my early lock appears to be the Bengals getting 3.5 points with the Bears ...

From Wendy Haeger, recalling words of wisdom from her late father and Milwaukee high school coach Edward Haeger: “He used to say to me when the Packers lost and I’d get so bummed out, ‘Hey, it’s a game. You win and you lose. You’ll get another chance to win. He just realized life is a little bit of both.” ...

That was Justice, a Labrador retriever and Leader Dog for the Blind candidate, hanging out with Pickford High School bus driver Gary Klop at the U.P. Track & Field Finals at Flivver Field.

Justice seemed to pass one test at the meet, flinching just slightly when the starter gun fired.

Yooper, who attended last year’s meet with Klop, washed out in the next stage for leader dogs ...

Norway High School graduate Ed Weiland, who writes for HoopsAnalyst.com, thinks a shooting guard in this year’s NBA draft could make an impact. And they could fizzle, too.

“The 2013 draft features three of the better shooting guard prospects I’ve seen in a few years,” Weiland said. “Victor Oladipo (Indiana), Ben McLemore (Kansas) and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (Georgia) all enter the draft with solid prospect numbers, but also some bust potential.” ...

Hall of Fame defensive end David “Deacon” Jones, who died recently at age 74, came up with the phrase “quarterback sack.”

Jones harassed quarterbacks from 1961 to 1974 but the NFL didn’t start counting sacks until 1982. Boston Globe pro football writer Ben Volin listed his top pre-sack pass rushers, with Willie Davis (Packers, 21 career fumble recoveries) and Leo “The Lion” Nomellini (49ers, 10 Pro Bowls) included with Jones and others ...

Never too early for my boys in Las Vegas to set the lines for college football games.

Notre Dame, despite an unsettled quarterback situation, stands as a six-point favorite when Michigan State visits South Bend on Sept. 21. It’s a pick ‘em for the Irish and Wolverines in Ann Arbor on Sept. 21. ...

Texas Rangers picked identical twins David and Ryan Ledbetter from Division II Cedarville (Ohio) University in the recent Major League Baseball draft.

Florence’s Kari Flunker is Cedarville’s chief women’s basketball assistant ...

Seven Michigan State golfers, according to Tim Staudt of the Lansing State Journal, have played in the U.S. Open golf tournament.

Baraga’s John (Gus) Koskinen is part of that group, participating in the 2006 U. S. Open.

Koskinen torched Pine Grove and Oak Crest to win the 2002 U.P. title ...

From Peter King, Sports Illustrated: “I think my guess is 2014 for the renewal of the Brett Favre-Green Bay Packers wedding vows.” ...

From Kevin Cullen, Boston Globe, on hockey’s Chicago Blackhawks: “In 2007, the Hawks’ attendance ranked next to last in the NHL. Within two years, it was the best. And if you haven’t heard 21,000 Chicagoans go nuts inside the United Center, well, as Stevie Wonder, of the Saginaw, Mich., Wonders put it, you haven’t done nothin’.” ...

From David Schoen, Las Vegas Review-Journal, on the stars from the 1980s — Don Mattingly, Mark McGwire, Kirk Gibson, Alan Trammell and Don Baylor —squaring off in the recent baseball brawl between the Dodgers and Diamondbacks: “(It) sort of resembled an episode of the old WWF’s “Saturday Night Main Event.” The only thing missing was Koko B. Ware jumping off the top of the dugout and hitting The Honky Tonk Man over the head with a guitar.” ...
