Health insurance not fair

August 14, 2009 - Lisa Reed
I find insurance is not fair, especially health insurance. If an employer offers insurance to its employees, the rate is usually cheaper than the employee could get on their own. The employee then has the choice to take advantage of that insurance program or not. If an employee is offered insurance by their employer, they should take it or they may not have another means to get insurance. For the sake of this article, let’s talk about the new BadgerCare Plus program for adults in Wisconsin (visit www.badgercareplus.org/faq.htm for more information) Under this program, adults who do not have health insurance offered by their employer can sign up to have their insurance paid for by the state. That is if they qualify. Working adults who are offered insurance through their employer do not qualify for this program. My opinion is this program is not fair. Someone who has insurance offered through their employer cannot even sign up for this program. They make too much money or do not qualify for a number of reasons. Instead they have to pay the premium/deductible, whether cheap or expensive, through their employer or get their own insurance through another insurance company. But adults who are unemployed or their employer does not offer health insurance and meet the qualifications can sign up for a program paid for by the state of Wisconsin. That’s not fair to those who work a full-time job with benefits and have to pay their own insurance. Just because their employer doesn’t offer them insurance or they do not have a job doesn’t make it fair for them to have the state pay their way. Just another new program being offered by Gov. Jim Doyle. Go Wisconsin!
