Family (Not So Fun) Night

August 5, 2013 - Theresa Proudfit
Can't say I was thrilled when my husband told me his sister Jane had four extra tickets to Packers Family Night in Green Bay over the weekend. But I heard the excitement in his voice so I knew I couldn't say no.

It was "Family Night" and I had married into a Packer family so I decided to take one for the team and head out for a fun filled day at Lambeau Field. I had my Urlacher jersey cleaned and ready for the day but I heard a bunch of grumbling under the breath in the house and decided against it. Several family members offered up Packer apparel for me to borrow but I chose a grey shirt and my green Spartan sweatshirt. "At least I'm wearing green" I said. That really was the best I could do.

After the two hour car ride listening to how much better the Packers are than the Bears I couldn't wait to get out and start tailgating. Maybe a brat and a few beers would help. However being surrounded by cheese heads and Rogers jersey's I didn't have much of an appetite.

Finally we head to the stadium for the scrimmage. I hadn't bothered to ask who the Packers were playing. I was just hoping to find another non-Packer fan to sympathize with. Looking around the enormous venue littered in green and gold the nausea really set in. The scrimmage is offense vs defense. Packers Vs Packers. Not only am I on my own, I don't even have a team to cheer for.

I was trying to find some good in the evening when I looked over at my family and realized they were all smiling and laughing and cheering. Most likely having the time of their life. So the next time the wave came around I stood up and threw my hands in the air. My husband grabbed me, hugged me and said "I'm so happy". Although I rolled my eyes at him, I knew it was true and that made me happy too.

We spent about 4 1/2 hours at the stadium before the fireworks went off and we were on our way home. From noon to midnight I endured Packer fanfare and nostalgia. This Bears fan was ready for bed. As I closed my eyes for the night I smiled. Partly because I knew my family had a great day but mostly because I knew I wouldn't be returning there anytime soon. Next time I think I'll drop them at the stadium and head to the mall.
