High hopes for MSU, USC football
August 5, 2013 - Burt Angeli
Always thought it would be nice for 1641 Parkview and USC John to attend a college football bowl game together. That didn’t seem possible this season with most of the pundits down on both Michigan State and Southern Cal.
Except for Phil Steele and his College Football Preview, which labels MSU and USC as “favorites.”
Steele predicts Michigan State and Nebraska to tie for first in the Big 10 Legends Division.
“After a disappointing season last year, I expect the Spartans will bounce back in a big way led by the Big 10’s best defense and a much more manageable schedule as they avoid Ohio State and Wisconsin from the Big 10 Leaders,” Steele wrote.
As for USC, Steele cites USC’s 15 returning starters in pegging the Trojans for Pac-12 South champs and No. 6 team in the country.
“USC goes from a disappointing team to a darkhorse national title contender,” Steele wrote.
There’s another MSU supporter out there in Chuck Long, the former Iowa and Detroit Lions quarterback now with the Big Ten Network. He’s picking Michigan State, citing a “very good” defense and the return of quarterback Andrew Maxwell, to win the Legends Division over Michigan and Nebraska.
“I think they (Spartans) will have a chip on their shoulder after going 7-6 last season,” Long said. “They are my dark horse. I think Maxwell will have a better year.”
I’ll spring for Bob and John’s bus ticket if MSU and USC meet in a bowl game.
