Retro styles, going green 'in style'

August 25, 2009 - Lisa Reed
The 1960s and 1970s are back. Area retailers are selling all sorts of items, from clothing and school supplies to dorm furniture, in retro colors - bright orange, purple, green. It’s quite a shock to those shopping that are not use to those bright colors. Another hit item lately is anything made of recycled materials. Recently my husband was eating tortilla-type chips out of a bag toting it was made from a percentage of recycled material. The bag didn’t have the normal plastic feeling and his comment was, “It makes me not so sure I want to be eating these out of this bag.” After he said that it made me think I didn’t want to eat those chips either. I am guessing and hoping just the outside of the bag was made with recycled material. Needless to say, I do believe he finished that bag of chips! Also a way I went retro in at home was I got organized by purchasing a file cabinet in the new bright orange color. I also purchased green recycled hanging folders for it. So now I feel like I will be filing in the “going green” era. Although I do not completely agree with everything made from recycled material or classified as “green.” For example, just because a compact florescent light bulb is being used today doesn’t mean it is good for the environment tomorrow.
