World’s richest 85 people richer than poorest 3.5 billion

January 20, 2014 - Chris Tomassucci

A while back I did a blog post about income inequality. In it, I mentioned some facts and figures illustrating the giant growing gap between the richest people and the rest of us:

Today for the first time ever, the bottom 90% of earners take home less than half of all pretax income, 49.6%. The top 1% takes home 22.5% of all pretax income.

That blog post was focused on the United States. Remember, I used this great GIF to illustrate:

A new study out has some more helpful illustrations for us regarding the growing gap between the rich and everyone else. They look at the world’s population, so take that into consideration.

Here’s my favorite nugget from the study: The richest 85 people in the world own the same wealth as the poorest 3.5 billion people.

Again, that’s: 85 people's wealth > 3,500,000,000 people's wealth.
