Classy coach dishes out credit to others

February 16, 2014 - Burt Angeli
Paul Whitt, classy boys basketball coach of the Northern Lakes Conference champion Goodman-Pembine Patriots, knows this wasn’t an overnight success story.

Goodman last won the NLC in 1994; Pembine never took home the league title. “This doesn't happen in one season,” Whitt said. “The groundwork was laid by our seniors last year. They helped us finish a 12-11 season really well, and helped jump start the expectations for this season.

“And I think of the coaches that played a part here before me. John Ostermann, John Swick and Bob Swanson coached these guys before me and laid the foundation. I'm just here at the right time.”

Whitt also saluted many others in the team’s superb season.

“We're blessed with some very talented players, but also guys of great character,” Whitt said. “They're not perfect, but willing to admit they aren't and stay accountable to the team.

“Their parents are a blessing to work with as well. We're on the same page, wanting to see young men develop more than basketball players. God's really been kind to me to give me this opportunity. I'm super thankful for a wife who really enjoys being the team mom, photographer, and everything else.”
