Hello flu bug – you’re back again this year
February 27, 2014 - Linda Lobeck
I really hadn’t thought much about getting the flu this year and decided against getting a flu shot. And the winter has been pretty cold, so I’m assuming that’s why I haven’t heard a lot of flu going around as I’ve heard in other years. Or maybe it’s just the time for it to kick up its heels and start going through households, offices and schools.
I was feeling pretty flu-like this past weekend and thought by Monday that was going to be it. That is until I started coughing and it really hit me – this is the flu. By Tuesday afternoon I was down for the count and couldn’t get it together to drag myself into work on Wednesday. There have been a few other people in the building with the same type of symptoms so I think it’s a fair assumption that the flu bug is alive and well and hitting people again.
It’s kind of hard to distinguish what you’re really feeling in light of the dragged out symptoms everyone is having in this long colder-than-normal winter. Everyone I talk with is feeling tired and generally worn out dealing with the cold. And it’s kind of hard to distinguish your normal shivers on a daily basis from something that may have to do with a virus or flu bug.
My best advice is stay home, eat some soup, and get better. You do no one any good dragging yourself around and spreading what you have. With a little common sense and a little luck, we’ll be able to get through the rest of this winter without a full-blown flu epidemic.
