A graduation speech to remember

May 27, 2014 - Linda Lobeck
Did you hear about the valedictorian from Liberty High School in South Carolina who decided to make a statement at his graduation last year? It hit the news at that time and is making a second appearance this year as a popular YouTube video with 811,809 hits already.

I think this will be a speech that his class will remember forever. As Roy Costner IV approached the podium for his valedictorian speech on June 3, 2013, he proceeded to rip up the speech that had been pre-approved by the school officials.

What happened next is truly amazing – this young man began to recite the Lord’s Prayer. You can hear the audience applauding him while the teachers and faculty members seated behind him on the stage show no reaction. Shame on them for not showing support his fine example.

He used this time during his speech to say a prayer since the school district decided to no longer include prayer at graduation ceremonies. Kudos to this young man for deciding to use his right of Freedom of Speech to pray at this important time in his life – his graduation from high school.

The question I still have is whether we would be having as many problems in schools today if prayer was still allowed? We pray for the victims after these acts of violence, but wouldn't it be more appropriate to use the power of prayer to keep them from happening?
