News from the Newbie

July 17, 2014 - Melissa Scholke
To those who may not recognize the unfamiliar face floating around the office of The Daily News this summer, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Melissa Scholke, and I have just embarked upon my time as a summer intern. Currently, I’m a junior at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, majoring in both English and Communication Studies. For all of my friends and family who consider me an avid bookworm, my major decision came as no surprise.

While I enjoy my time in Ann Arbor, I’m ecstatic to escape from classrooms and libraries and return to the beauty of the Upper Peninsula in the summer. I’m an Iron Mountain native who graduated from Kingsford High School in 2012. I’m only back in the U.P. temporarily. However, working on the local newspaper will allow me to not only gain vital job experience, I’ll be able to stay up-to-date on all of the events happening in our area.

Back at U of M, I indulge my passion for writing by working at the opinion section for my school newspaper. I’ve learned, over the past year at this position, I surprisingly possess an interest in politics, especially issues regarding human rights and the environment. In addition to my status as a budding activist, I fervently enjoy music, art, and jogging. With this myriad of interests, I’m excited to see which direction my following blog posts will take.
