Special decorations from Mom
December 7, 2009 - Linda Lobeck
I honestly wasn’t sure how I would feel about this first Christmas after my mother died. But remembering the special past Christmas celebrations helps to ease the loss of someone in your life. Back when we were cleaning out the garage at my Mom’s house this fall, we came upon some items that she always put up for Christmas. My sisters didn’t want them, so I went ahead and brought them home. While getting my decorating going last week, I remembered those items in a box in my basement and decided to incorporate them into other items I hold dear — the special angel ornaments I have collected for my tree and the Nativity that my husband gave to me our first Christmas together. Rather than making me feel sad, I felt comforted with these things in my home. One item I put out is a stuffed reindeer that plays music. I’m sure my kids will get a kick out of seeing it at our house this year. I hope it brings back happy Christmas memories for them that they shared with their grandmother. Despite this loss and missing her on Christmas, I feel a sense of hope and happiness for the many celebrations we did have together. Gathering together as a family to celebrate Christ’s birth will always be the most important part of my Christmas celebration. Thank you Mom for teaching this important lesson. Merry Christmas to all!
