Go potty, get BIG one cookie

January 11, 2010 - Ron Deuter
My wife and I recently started training our son Jake to use the potty. He’s a long way off from cutting my diaper bill in half, but making good initial progress. Whenever he is successful, we’re always quick to follow with loads of praise and even a cookie. Naturally, he caught on to the cookie bit pretty quick. Whenever I ask him if he has to use the potty, he responds with a big grin, “Go potty, get BIG one cookie!” Big one cookie to him is a regular chocolate chip cookie. We also have animal crackers in the house. So those are known by him as little one cookies. He came up with these descriptions all on his own. He used to love animal crackers, until the day he spotted mom digging through a stash of chips ahoy. It was bound to happen. During her pregnancy last year, my wife single-handedly kept the fine folks baking and packaging chips ahoy cookies from suffering any ill-effects of the recession. Now exposed to life with a big one cookie, it’s all Jake wants. Unless you tell him no. Then he tries to work a compromise. “Big one cookie no,” he’ll say serious and straight-faced. Then he’ll tilt his head, give a half smile and quietly ask, “Little one cookie?” Cookies aside, I think our verbal praise to Jake’s potty success hasn't been completely lost on him. The other morning I went to use the bathroom and when I came out, Jake was standing by the door. “What you doing Daddy,” he asked, holding his arms out in a “whatever” gesture. I told him I had gone potty. He paused to think for a second and then put down his arms. “Good boy Daddy,” he said rather unenthusiastically as he turned and walked away for something more interesting.
