Wild mushroom picking time

April 29, 2010 - Lisa Reed

It’s that time of year to start picking wild mushrooms. My husband went for a walk in the woods on Monday and came home with a mesh bag full of beefsteak mushrooms. He said Morel mushrooms are not ready yet; we need rain. As for some types of wild mushrooms, there are reports they are deadly if the wrong type are eaten. I trust my husband knows his fungi; some are edible and some are poisonous. He knows what to look for as he has been hunting morels for several years. Although my husband doesn’t even like mushrooms (he picks them out of soups and casseroles all the time), he loves beefsteaks and morels. This week, he made venison stroganoff with our beefsteaks, and I made venison beer chops with them. Both meals were mighty tasty. If you have never hunted mushrooms, take along someone who knows what to look for. And after picking them, prepare them in your favorite dishes and enjoy eating them!
