Obama clueless, Morris says

June 4, 2010 - Jim Anderson

Criticizing Barack Obama is one thing.

Finding fault with him for his inability to feed the multitudes with a handful of loaves and fishes is quite another.

In a recent column (“Obama doesn’t have a clue,” The Hill), Fox News wiseguy Dick Morris declares Obama incompetent.

Morris writes:

“America is getting the point that its president doesn’t have a clue. He doesn’t know how to stop the oil from spilling. He is bereft of ideas about how to create jobs in the aftermath of the recession. He has no idea how to keep the European financial crisis contained. He has no program for repaying the massive debt hole into which he has dug our nation without tax increases he must know will only deepen the pit. “

OK, one at a time.

1. Obama doesn’t know how to stop the oil from spilling:

So the reason Bush-Cheney weakened safeguards and established a culture of lax oversight for offshore drilling was because they were confident in the White House’s ability to stop a spill after the fact? I suppose they couldn’t predict that someone lacking their unimpeachable expertise in oil matters might one day be in charge ... say, why haven’t Halliburton and/or Cheney explained yet how to stop the gusher?

2. Obama is bereft of ideas about how to create jobs in the aftermath of the recession:

Yes, Obama’s jobs record has been disappointing. But here’s what was reported today (even as a lackluster jobs report sent stocks tumbling): “After nearly two years of constant job losses, the U.S. economy has added 982,000 jobs so far in 2010, adding workers in every month.”

Obama inherited a jobs market in freefall and there will always be disagreement about the prescribed remedies. (Count me among those finding fault.) I’ll also suggest there’s a vast distance between “clueless” and “disappointing.”

3. Obama has no idea how to keep the European financial crisis contained:

Probably because there’s only so much a U.S. president can do about a European financial crisis? Maybe we should just take Glenn Beck’s advice: Stock up on gold coins marked up 90 percent by his sponsor Goldline.

4. Obama has no program for repaying the massive debt hole into which he has dug our nation without tax increases he must know will only deepen the pit:

Our debt hole has been dug, primarily, under the leadership of Republican presidents. The national debt is now $13 trillion. In 1981, Ronald Reagan inherited a national debt of under $1 trillion from Jimmy Carter. After that, more than $8 trillion of debt was added under Republican administrations. Under George W. Bush, the national debt grew from $5.7 trillion to more than $10.6 trillion.

Fair or not, President Obama likes to say Republicans drove the economy into the ditch. Morris, apparently, is declaring Obama a dimwitted failure after 14 1/2 months because he still hasn't made the car fly.
