June 24, 2010 - Nikki Younk
You know how some people get all excited when they reminisce about their favorite TV shows from their youth? They get all pumped up about “Fraggle Rock,” or “Salute Your Shorts,” or “Are You Afraid of the Dark.” Why aren’t there great kid shows like that these days, they moan.
Well, I feel the same way about snacks from my youth. The best stuff never lasts.
Does anyone else remember these choice morsels? I’m guessing most of them were around in the early- to mid-90s.
-Instant oatmeal with gummi bears. The bears were supposed to “magically appear” when you poured hot water over the mix. Of course, the bears were always there...they were just hidden with oatmeal dust.
-Bonkers candy. These tasty little gems were similar to Starburst, but each piece contained two distinct flavors-one on the inside, one on the outside. In the late-90s, another candy by the name of Bonkers appeared, but it wasn’t the same thing. This led to much confusion and disappointment, mainly from me.
-Soda-licious fruit snacks. They were covered in sour sugar and came in cherry cola, root beer, and orange soda flavors. Legend has it that there was also a lemon-lime soda flavor. Apparently, there’s an online petition to get these back in production.
-Reese’s crunchy cookie cup minis. Mmmm, peanut butter and chocolate cookie pieces covered with even more chocolate. You get the same sort of thing with Twix PB, I guess.
Excuse me now while I invent a time machine.
