Do more for less
June 25, 2010 - Blaine Hyska
It is good to learn that Kingsford officials are continuing to take steps to reduce costs.
No one wants lawlessness, burning buildings, or unpaved streets, but tax increases are simply unacceptable.
Kingsford City Council has increased its millage levy by 0.547 mills, for the 2010-11 budget.
Many property assessments decreased this year in Kingsford, much to the delight of homeowners. After all, property market values have been going down for years.
Unfortunately, this millage increase will probably take care of those assessment decreases — and assessments are easy to increase again. They don’t require council action.
Watch for your assessment increase next year.
The bottom line is — what else — the economy.
Many local people I’ve talked to have not gotten pay increases in months, or years.
Others have had their hours and/or benefits cut. Yet they feel fortunate to have a job.
And these same workers must improve their service/product, or face the reality of being forced out of business.
That’s just the way it is today. America has changed its spending habits.
I guess taxpayers are merely asking their government to do what’s being asked of them.
Do more for less — a lot less
