Readers of the online version of The Daily News have, no doubt, noticed that the comments section has been removed from the website.
We chose to discontinue these posts because of the comments generated by some of the readers. It was getting out of hand.
The Daily News was one of the few papers in the Upper Peninsula to allow comments. We allowed this privilege because we wanted to give readers a chance to air their views.
And, let’s be honest, they were a source of entertainment.
Through the years of posts, the comment section developed a life of its own.
A blogger might begin by making a comment on a story. You scroll down to a few posts later, though, and the subject of conversation had completely changed. It became a battlefield of political and/or religious philosophies.
Religion and politics can’t be settled in a sentence or two. The bloggers would jump from story to story, continuing their never-ending debate.
Readers would call or come in and tell us they refuse post a comment because of the nasty nature of some the bloggers.
The comment section was no longer an extension of The Daily News.
Will comments be gone forever? We may bring them back.
We’re investigating ways to permanently ban unruly bloggers. In the current system, we can block a poster, but he or she can change their user name and start posting again.
Some past posters were removed more than 100 times. Some kids just don’t listen.
Meanwhile, remember that we continue to accept Letters to the Editor, and Speak Out comments. They can be mailed or e-mailed to The Daily News, P.O. Box 460, Iron Mountain MI 49801, or firstname.lastname@example.org.
