Support for the Michigan team

January 7, 2011 - Linda Lobeck
It’s hard enough to be a woman in a houseful of men on a normal weekend, but try New Year’s Day as well as Sunday chocked full of sports on television.

With both of my sons home for the holidays, there hasn’t been much on our television other than sports. It’s either watch sports or spend a lot of time in my bedroom watching HGTV. But I did find myself drawn to the Lions-Viking game yesterday afternoon. I’m really not a fan or follower of any team, but there was something that stirred in me when I saw the Lions doing so well. I guess I have always rooted for the underdog and seeing the Lions go out of the regular season as winners was a good thing. They finished at 6-10 and tripled last season’s win total!

As a child, my Dad was a staunch Lions fan — sticking with his team through both good and bad years. One of his brothers as well as a smattering of nieces and nephews and neighbors were Packer fans. One day I innocently asked my Dad why he wasn’t a Packer fan too. He told me that when you live in Michigan, you support Michigan teams. Enough said.

So, when my kids and co-workers would ask me what team I like best, I would say the Lions. Both my husband and older son are Viking fans and my younger son is a Titans fan. (Their grandfather would be so disappointed.) During the past couple of years, I heard over and over again that “my team lost” another game. It was so nice not to hear that yesterday — the tide may be changing for the Lions. You never know, it could be due to the fact that my Dad's still pulling for his team in heaven.
