| | Go ice fishing at least onceJanuary 12, 2011 - Lisa ReedIce fishing is a winter activity that everyone should do at least once. Many people do not like to venture out on the frozen water. I don’t blame them; it is not always safe. Being married to a man who enjoys ice fishing all season long, I take the time to go ice fishing with him a couple times during the season. My rules: I go when the ice is more than 10 inches. I only go for up to six hours. I wear plenty of layers and bring extra clothes. I pack lots of snacks and drinks. I also bring reading material, a radio and a heat source. My husband sets me up with a jig pole and I jig in the portable ice fishing shanty while he socializes with his buddies and checks his tip ups before joining me in the shack to warm up. It can get really cold while ice fishing, but there is nothing like catching enough keepers for a dinner while fishing on several inches of ice. The camaraderie is also an important aspect of ice fishing. For those who are off work in the winter months, fishing can be another way to pass the time and maybe catch some fish as long as all safety precautions are taken.
