Gold Medal memory

April 3, 2009 - Jim Anderson
It promises to be a great (long) weekend for Raymond Bray, Frank Rodman and crew at the Hermansville Gold Medal.

UM’s Carly Benson will be on hand, with what must be a record 16 women’s teams competing in two classes.

Staying home to enjoy Michigan State? No, watch the Spartans dispose of the Huskies at the Alias or Broad Axe, then head over for the Class A men’s game at 7 p.m. between Hermansville Luft’s Advertiser and Green Bay The Bar. Can’t get much better.

That community center is deceiving. About 20 years ago, I drove up from Green Bay on a Sunday morning to play in my first Gold Medal. I didn’t think I’d need directions to find the gym in Hermansville. I arrived early, and ours was the first game, so I parked outside a big building and watched for activity. The locals must have wondered who was the idiot stalking the museum.

Speaking of goons, my line score from a Class E defeat the other night was 0 points, 4 fouls. I asked scorekeeper Kuba Bal about my chances for the all-tournament team.

“I’ll put in a good word for the sportsmanship trophy,” he said.

That was kind. But they might want to first check with the much-elbowed Pete Pericolosi, among others.
