This Is How I Roll
March 22, 2011 - Theresa Proudfit
According to Wikipedia "Contemporary roller derby is an American-invented contact sport with roots in sports entertainment. The game is based on formation roller skating around an oval track by two teams. Points are scored as the designated scoring player (the "jammer") of each team laps members of the opposing team, including its "blockers," hence offense and defense typically occur simultaneously."
....Yeah I don't really understand it all either but every Wednesday and Sunday I put on my black stretch pants and short shorts and skate like the wind...ed old lady. That's right I'm officially a roller girl. Payed my monthly dues and chose my new identity. Feel free to refer to me as "Snap Shot Slammer iso 3200" from this paragraph on.
Don't laugh, I'm totally serious about this. I started roller skating with my friend Nicole sometime in early grade school. Fourth grade for sure, possibly 3rd. We went to the rink just about every weekend until high school.
If you've been following my blogs you really should of seen this coming. Didn't you notice my excitement when the old rainbow roller rink opened in December of 2009? I told you I was giddy. Back then I had promised to the leave the 80's wardrobe behind, but I have to re-nig on that statement. Sorry, but my bright purple unicorn knee high socks are way too cool to leave at home.
Anyway we have been practicing for a few months now and we still need lots more practice but eventually we will start competing. Probably late fall or early winter of this year. In the mean time we will be fundraising. Yup, Derby Girls Need Money Too! So if you would like to support us PLEASE DO! Dr. Santini's Office has already supplied us with our mouth guards!!! Thanks guys, now we look tough!
We are also looking for a new place to skate. We love Skate Boulevard and Jennie and Jeff have been fantastic but eventually we will out grow them and need our own place. One of the smarter Derby Girls is thinking ahead and entered us into the "We hear you America!" Readers Digest contest. Good thinking Lynn Currie. Be careful of her though, she looks sweet but she'll knock you on your butt if you don't skate fast enough! So help us out! Click on the link! You can vote ten times a day until the end of the contest which is May 16th. So please vote for us 10 times a day! You just have to register your name and email address so they know you are a real person.
