Hittin' the road
May 12, 2011 - Nikki Younk
What’s your favorite way to travel? Do you want to get there as soon as possible, or are you the type that enjoys the journey just as much as the destination?
I’d put myself in the latter group. Road trips win out over plane flights hands down.
My sister’s recent road trip from Norway to Los Angeles leaves me reminiscing about all the long drives I’ve had in the past, especially the time I took a Greyhound bus from Iron Mountain to Corpus Christi, Texas.
This happened in the late summer of 2007. I needed a cheap way to get down to Texas, so plane tickets (at $400 a pop) were out of the question. I didn’t have my own car at the time and I doubt I would have enjoyed paying the gas money. So Greyhound, at a reasonable $90, was the way to go.
Over a period of two days, I traveled through Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. I met plenty of shady folk, including a lady in Chicago who wanted to steal my suitcase, and I saw many dubious landmarks, including the “World’s Largest Truck Stop” in Iowa. I neither showered nor slept.
And I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
You may think me strange or crazy for going through with such a trek, and I’d probably agree with you. At least I ended up with some good stories and another road trip to save in the memory bank.
