Support IMHS in contest

June 13, 2011 - Linda Lobeck
Although we live in an area that is smaller than most in terms of population, don’t discount the loyalty and enthusiasm of Yoopers when it comes to being proud of where they are from.

There have been two recent contests I have been involved with where you can go onto web pages each day and vote for a certain area/program. And by getting to be a top votegetter, that group will be able to win some money from the sponsor of the contest.

The first was the Reader’s Digest contest in which the local roller derby gals were trying to get enough votes to win money that would enable them to have their own rink dedicated to roller derby. Unfortunately, even with a lot of residents getting on board, they didn’t make it into the top 10. But it did give the people voting each day a chance to show their support for these gals who are trying to start up something new and exciting in the area.

A second contest that I got in on was dealt with the best fishing area with my hometown of Gladstone as one of the top finishers in the Midwest. That was also a lot of fun to do, because I know firsthand that Gladstone is top fishing spot. I spent a lot of quality time with my grandfather in that area fishing — he was an avid fisherman who never disclosed where he had gotten his catch from.

Last week, a teacher from Iron Mountain sent me some information on yet another contest that Ford is sponsoring. A video made by local IMHS students has been selected to be in the contest. From Wednesday through July 15, we can go on the website (www.fordfocusonschools.com) and cast a vote a day to show support for the video project completed by five area students.

If they get enough votes, the school will get anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000 for the program.

I like these types of contests, because I think it shows the level of love people have for their hometowns and areas as well as showcasing the talents of young people.

So, let’s get behind the IMHS students and show our support. Let’s make their video a top votegetter in the contest!
