Rod Serling outshines fireworks any day
July 5, 2011 - Nikki Younk
I hope everyone had a wonderful Independence Day weekend. It's a time to celebrate our country's birthday, to hold cookouts with family and friends, to watch fabulous displays of fireworks.
Or, if you're like me, you hole yourself up indoors with the air conditioning on high and obsessively watch SyFy's "Twilight Zone" marathon.
Seriously, "Twilight Zone" marathons are the only reasons I look forward to those inferior, non-gift giving holidays like Independence Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and New Year's Day. I can sit for hours and watch and re-watch my favorite episodes.
Remember the one in which aliens came to Earth and pretended to be helpful? They even left behind a book entitled "To Serve Man." Sounds positive, right? Think again folks, because you're in the Twilight Zone now. In fact, the aliens were just being nice so they could entice humans back to their planet — to eat them. "To Serve Man" was a cookbook!
In another classic episode, a surprisingly young William Shatner saw a gremlin tearing apart his plane. It's ambiguous as to whether Shatner was crazy or not until the very end, when the camera panned to a damaged airplane wing. Whoa!
I could go on and on about my favorite episodes and the handsome actors they feature (Jack Klugman, anyone?).
If you enjoy sci-fi, mystery, or the just plain scary, this show was and still is for you. Watch it.
