LSSU hockey situation

July 19, 2011 - Burt Angeli
Northern Michigan is ready to leave the CCHA and join the WCHA with Michigan Tech.

So where does that leave Lake Superior State University’s hockey program?

Peter Pietrangelo of The Evening News paints a bleak picture if the Lakers don’t find more teams to “salvage” the CCHA.

“If Alaska stays, the CCHA could get Alabama-Huntsville on board to make a five-team conference.” Pietrangelo wrote. “Then just one more team would have to be recruited. Mercyhurst, Niagara, Canisius, Robert Morris and Rochester Institute of Technology could be viable candidates, both geographically and competitively. If Alaska bolts for the WCHA, then two teams would have to be recruited to join.

“The last option has to happen. Without a viable conference, the Lakers have little chance to survive competitively or financially.”
