These girls have got game

July 21, 2011 - Burt Angeli
My brother and nephew lost to girls in the U.P. Open tennis tournament in Kingsford.

I gave them heck for besmirching the Angeli doubles legacy that I had crafted for so many long hot summers. It’s not easy winning all that consolation hardware.

“But Uncle Burt, they play college tennis,” explained my nephew Chops. “They just had more consistent strokes. They were just solid.”

Then I found out that Abby Tresedder (UW-La Crosse) and Meagan Harrington (Concordia Wisconsin), two of my favorite tennis players, beat them in the semifinals and knocked off two other guys for the men’s B doubles title.

I had to apologize to my brother and nephew.

Abby was my doubles partner last summer and, obviously, picked up a couple pointers. Meagan must have been taking notes when she showed up to watch.

“Uncle Burt, why don’t you play next year?

What? With my creaky shoulder, tender wrist and bad temper.

I’m out there only with a C doubles division and a consolation trophy on the line ...
