I like Sonny Chiba

July 25, 2011 - Nikki Younk
When you think of classic martial arts movies, you obviously think of the master, Bruce Lee. And why not? He was downright awesome.

However, there are others out there who deserve respect as well. I’m talking about the one, the only, Mr. Sonny Chiba.

Chiba’s characters, especially Terry Tsurugi in the “Street Fighter” trilogy, were generally ruthless hit-men with few morals. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any actor do “bad” as well as he did. With a scowl and a sneer, he could strike fear into the hearts of most. The man could even make eating an apple look sinister.

That’s not even touching on his martial art and gymnastic skills. There’s this one scene in the third “Street Fighter” in which Chiba is working out upside down when a phone rings. He proceeds to walk on his hands over to the phone, flip, then karate kick the phone receiver into the air and into his hand. For no reason! He just did it because he could!

A warning for the faint of heart — the “Street Fighter” movies are quite violent and gory at times. Watch at your own discretion. If you can handle it, you’ll be rewarded.
