Where does the time go?

May 8, 2009 - Linda Lobeck
In a short 5 1/2 days, my youngest son, Matt will be done with his high school years. It's hard to believe that I will have two sons in college next year. I'd better plan on keeping working for a lot longer or go shake that money tree outside my backyard. When your kids are in elementary school, the time seems to go by a lot slower. You're busy with the many activities they are in and setting up play dates with friends. That's when the kids still want you around as a room mom or helping out in their class. All that changes when they hit high school. They don't want to see you near a classroom, at a dance or even an all-night graduation party. You can supply food, but just drop it off and leave. You can still watch them from afar as they play sports with all the other parents who are also feeling that distancing as their children are starting to grow up. Everyone tells you that this time will go by quickly, but it doesn't really hit you until you have one graduate. You sit back and wonder where the time went. But they are excited with all the end-of-the year events, finishing out their classes, spending time with their friends at parties and picnics, and getting out of school earlier than the rest of the high school. Being the oldest in the school has some privileges. So as I gather all the memories of Matt's years in school to get ready for his graduation party, it will be me that will be a little sad and kind of wistful about that little boy I took to kindergarten 13 years ago. It's a part of the growing up process and I look forward to the memories he will have of his college years and beyond. May all his dreams and those of the Class of 2009 come true!
