ScuttleBu(r)t leftovers

January 6, 2012 - Burt Angeli
Some stuff doesn’t make Saturday’s column. Here you go:

ScuttleBu(r)t ...

Anna DeForge, fresh off her return from Niagara, tallied 16 points in 32 minutes as Kayseri downed Antakya 78-72.  Anna hit six of nine field goals, including three of six from three-point land, in the Turkish pro basketball league. She also added five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Anna was home for Christmas and this was her first game back in Turkey ...

New Houghton Mining Gazette sports writer Michael Bleach spent the 2010 summer covering the St. Louis Cardinals for the baseball Web site MLB.com. “For three months, I was immersed in baseball,” Bleach said. “If you can ask (former Cardinals manager) Tony LaRussa tough questions, you can ask anyone tough questions.” Welcome to the Copper Country, Michael ...

Congrats to Marinette St. Thomas Aquinas High School girls basketball coach Satch Englund on winning his 250th game. Englund also helps out Ken Hofer with the Menominee football team. One of my unforgettable moments was watching Englund and Niagara’s Terry Youren, rarely mild mannered when they got together, get a bit feisty in a state tournament game ...

Forest Park football was part of the Ironwood Daily Globe’s top sports stories of the year. Hurley’s unbeaten regular season ranked No. 1, with the Midgets recovering from a 16-0 deficit to beat the Trojans 19-16 ...

Kudos to Showtime for “A Game of Honor,” a great behind-the-scenes look at the Army-Navy football game. The two-hour program, with the closing credits also moving, honors the “gallant servants of the nation.” ...

Eden Prairie’s Mike Grant, son of former  Vikings coaching legend Bud Grant, won his sixth Minnesota state high school football title last week. Former area basketball coach Jerry Hautala, who passed along the game program from the Minnesota state football finals, pointed out the big Eden Prairie linemen averaging about 270 pounds. The best one, Nick Davidson (6-6, 275), is out with a broken leg ...

College basketball fans should note that perennial NCAA men’s basketball power Butler faces UW-Green Bay on Saturday, Jan. 28. Tip-off is 6 p.m. at the Resch Center ...

Montana State running back Cody Kirk, nephew of Iron Mountain grad Marc Wender, led the Bobcats to the NCAA Division 1 playoffs with over 1,300 yards rushing ...

From Brad Dickson, Omaha World Herald: “New Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said the rats at Wrigley Field are as big as pigs. I can see it now, the Cubs are one out from going to the World Series when a 200-pound rat levels the Cubs catcher and the opponent scores two runs to win the game.” ...

St. Cloud State’s Kevin Gravel, a defenseman from Kingsford, was one of six WCHA players and Michiganders on the USA team roster for the World Junior Championships in Alberta ...
