Patrol car pursuit

May 8, 2009 - Jim Anderson
Dickinson County Sheriff Scott Celello is recommending the purchase of two 2009 Dodge Charger police patrol vehicles. The Charger apparently wasn’t the preferred option — it’s rear-wheel drive — but the county’s choices are limited by problems in the auto industry. Both Edwards Chevrolet of Iron Mountain and ERA Chevrolet of Norway were unable to bid because GM has cut off such orders. The Chargers would come through a state purchasing program ($22,043 each, plus $4,609 each for police accessories). A grant from the U.S. Rural Development Authority will help cover the cost. The county board is scheduled to act Monday night. Dodge says the 2009 Charger, with a 5.7-liter HEMI engine, is the ultimate in pursuit power. “The new engine will give the good guys more horses under the hood and even better fuel economy,” a Dodge promotion says. The fuel rating is 16 miles per gallon city and 25 highway. 5/11 addendum: Upon receiving new information, the county accepted a bid from Town & Country Sales of Quinnesec for two 2009 Ford Crown Victoria police vehicles at a cost of $22,316 each. Accessories will add $4,609 to the cost of each, for a total cost for both vehicles of $49,240. Sheriff Celello changed his recommendation after learning that the availability of the Dodge vehicles was in question. Celello was also able to clarify the cost for accessories and installation from Town & Country, making the local dealer’s bid more competitive. Addendum addendum: It's back to the Dodges. The county will purchase two 2009 Dodge Charger police vehicles through a Sterling Heights supplier at a cost of $24,365 each, plus accessories. Ford, it turns out, was unable to supply the vehicles until near the end of the year.
