Tourney for small schools

Phelps will host the 2012 version of “The Best with the Least” basketball tournament pitting the four smallest high schools in the state.

Mercer (student population 35) hosted Butternut (53), South Shore in Port Wing (43) and Phelps (35) in December. Phelps, which plays Florence and Goodman-Pembine in the Northern Lakes Conference, does not field a jayvee team.

“We don’t have that luxury of gradual player development,” Phelps girls basketball coach Josh Olivotti told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “When you come in you’re playing high school varsity basketball.” ...
