Can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a cheering section for an assistant coach but Iron Mountain’s Liz Momont had one for Marquette’s girls basketball game at Kingsford. Momont helps out Marquette head coach Ben Smith, who told me the Mountaineer has worked out well. She also student-teaches with Smith. Liz’s parents, Mike and Mary Jo, along with other Momonts and Kriegls turned out for the game ...

Look for another Weber to enter the Gladstone Athletic Hall of Fame. Ginger (Weber) Moore, an Iron Mountain elementary teacher and former Mountaineer basketball assistant, joined the inaugural class Saturday. Ginger called her sister, Brianne, my “favorite one-on-one player.” Daily Press’ Denny Grall, who has watched a couple Gladstone athletes over the years, says Brianne “will likely be selected to the Hall in the near future.” ...

Austin Young quit playing in two different Pop Warner League youth football seasons before developing into an Escanaba High School star. “I didn’t like it,” Young told Denny Grall of The Daily Press. Young, who ran through just everybody last season except Kingsford, went on to break several Eskymo school marks. The ace quarterback may wind up at slot receiver for Northern Michigan ...
