Mountaineers fulfill guarantee

March 18, 2012 - Burt Angeli
Iron Mountain backed up a promise in the Class C boys basketball regional final with Negaunee. When I asked Bucky Johnson if he and the “Brick” had anything special planned for the Miners, the Mountaineer coach responded, “I can guarantee you this game won’t be like the last one.”

Sure enough.

Negaunee ran roughshod over the Mountaineers in the regular season finale, capping a perfect Mid-Peninsula Conference regular season with a 65-39 decision.

In the regional final at Escanaba, Negaunee squeezed out a quarterfinal berth with a 47-46 victory. Iron Mountain fought to the bitter end.

Josh Beauchamp, who when healthy has the most explosive moves for a Mountaineer since Bryan Schorman, drained 25 points with six treys. Nate Secinaro, looking like a combination Albert Galeazzi-Bob Fredy on the boards, was relentless in grabbing 22 rebounds. Alex Herman, who helped one of the officials find his whistle during one sequence, led a Mountaineer defense that handcuffed MPC Player of the Year Tyler Jandron. Ty Thomann and Taylor Huotari also made big contributions.

My hat’s off to all of the Mountaineers for their outstanding effort.
