Gravel in 'exceptional' hockey group

March 25, 2012 - Burt Angeli
Kingsford defenseman Kevin Gravel was among an “exceptional group” of student-athletes on the St. Cloud State (Minn.) hockey team.

“It’s an exceptional group of young men and they are high achievers in the classroom and on the ice,” Coach Bob Motzko told the St. Cloud Times. “To be around them is special.”

Four St. Cloud players posted 4.0 grade-point averages for the fall semester. Gravel and seven others earned WCHA Scholar Athlete honors.

To earn the honor, players must have completed at least one year of residency at the college before the current academic year and must also have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.0 scale) for the previous two semesters or three quarters, or may qualify if their overall GPA is at least 3.50 for all terms at his current institution.

St. Cloud’s season ended with a 4-1 loss to North Dakota in the WCHA Final Five. The Huskies registered a 17-17-5 season mark. For the year, Gravel tallied 1 goal and 7 assists with a plus two. The defenseman was second on the team with 67 blocks. He also had six penalties for 12 minutes.
