Before a storm hits

April 19, 2012 - Blaine Hyska
One hundred fifty-nine people were killed and more than 1,000 injured when a massive tornado ripped through Joplin, Mo., in May 2011.

April 16-20 is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Michigan and Wisconsin.

In Wisconsin, state officials held a mock tornado drill on Thursday. Emergency alert radios were activated, and broadcast media aired test weather warnings.

If you were outside raking your yard, you missed it.

Last year, Iron Mountain Fire Department officials tested its old tornado warning siren. It hadn’t been used in years, but it worked.

Not everybody could hear it but it is better than having nothing.

Tornado season is approaching, and we’ve had some unusual weather this year. Anything can happen, even a tornado.

We ought to have some type of audible weather warning system in place in the local area. Local communities need to take action now, before a storm hits.
