Vandals hit Ishpeming track
April 26, 2012 - Ron Deuter
Ishpeming’s track and field team is competing on the road this spring due to profane graffiti being spraypainted on their track.
According to the Marquette Mining Journal, the school placed a tarp over the offensive word during football season and other graffiti on the press box and ticket booth at the track site were painted over.
This spring, the graffiti was painted on the press box and ticket booth again.
Ishpeming athletic director Terry Roberts said the school is not sure what to do with the affected portion of the track.
“Do you take out the section, or spray over the profanity,” he told the Mining Journal. “Whatever we do, it will be expensive. It’s all up in the air.”
Ishpming head track coach Scott Syrjala is so upset with the vandalism, he’s offering a reward to help identify and convict the perpetrator(s).
“I’m putting up a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this vandalism,” he said. “It’s a bummer. It’s a new facility and other schools want to come here to compete.”
