McGinn earns draft awards

April 30, 2012 - Burt Angeli
Escanaba’s Bob McGinn, pro football writer with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, has earned honors from Peter King of Sports Illustrated and The Huddle Report.

King gave McGinn his “Media guy of the weekend” award for “10 direct hits in his mock NFL draft, including the unlikely bull's-eye of Dont'a Hightower to New England, Whitney Mercilus to Houston, Kevin Zeitler to Cincinnati and Courtney Upshaw to the Ravens a few picks too early.

“And he had 85 of his annual top 100 go in the top 100 of the draft, including Regina (Canada) defensive lineman Akiem Hicks, who was picked 89th overall by the Saints.

“McGinn's hard work served his readers very well in Wisconsin this year, as usual.

The Huddle Report ranked McGinn’s NFL draft board as the best in the country for the second straight year. He finished tied for second in his first year of selecting the top 100 players drafted.

McGinn, a five-time Wisconsin sportswriter of the year, was enshrined in the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. He also served as a mentor this blogger many years when we both worked at the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
