Familiar 'Niagara' face at ceremony

May 2, 2012 - Burt Angeli
Never know who you’ll run into at the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame banquet.

Former Niagara High School coach Bob DeKeyser was in attendance to honor St. Norbert College assistant and 2012 U.P. Hall of Fame inductee Terry Sayen. DeKeyser, a St. Norbert assistant for 13 years, lists Niagara among his previous coaching stops.

DeKeyser was around in 1976 when I started at The Daily News. Joe Antonini was the Niagara head coach back then with a famed football staff of DeKeyser, Steve Ohan, Terry Youren, “Whitey” Langlois and Kerry Grippen.

DeKeyser has also coached high school football at Lena, Oconto and New London. The All-WSUC performer at UW-Platteville also coached there.

At St. Norbert, DeKeyser works with special teams and defensive backs. He also coached SNC quarterbacks during his time in De Pere.

Sayen, who also tutors SNC defensive backs, is a Gwinn native who coached Munising to the 1980 Class C state football title.
