Vikings edge Lions, 12-10

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Dan Orlovsky and the Detroit Lions were on the edge of their own end zone late in the first quarter, facing third down and long, a determined Vikings defense, and a loud Metrodome crowd.
Orlovsky took the shotgun snap, backed up and rolled right with Minnesota’s Jared Allen in pursuit.
Oops.
Forgetting to watch his feet as he scanned the field for an open receiver, Orlovsky wandered a yard or two beyond the boundary and was whistled for an embarrassing safety.
At the end of an ugly 12-10 victory by the Vikings on Sunday, Orlovsky’s gaffe fittingly proved to be the difference for the still-winless Lions.
‘‘I wasn’t going to just sit back there and try to hold the ball and give them points. And I ended up giving them points. Just a dumb play by me,’’ said Orlovsky, who was sacked six times — four by Kevin Williams — and went 12-for-21 for 150 yards and a touchdown in his first career start.
