AUGUSTA, Mich. (AP) — Three hundred college students have scrubbed thousands of headstones at a cemetery for veterans near Battle Creek.
It was a service project Saturday for business freshmen at Western Michigan University, who sign up for community work to ease the transition to college. Parker Brighton of Lake Odessa tells the Kalamazoo Gazette (http://bit.ly/1aS46hn) it was "cool" and an "honor."
After learning about the history of Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, students spent about 90 minutes cleaning headstones with soap, water and sponges. A.J. Albright of Big Rapids says he thought about the names of the soldiers and their stories.
No matter how busy college life is, Albright says there's always time to give back to a community.
