Another tax increase
POSTED: May 9, 2008
EDITOR:Attention Breitung Township residents. Our elected officials on the Breitung Township Board quietly adopted a resolution at their meeting on Monday, April 28 that will result in a tax increase for township residents.
We will soon be billed for garbage pickup at the rate of $63.48 per residence, $10.58 per month for the period of July to December.
What is so disturbing about this tax increase is that for many township residents, garbage pickup is the only visible service we receive for the property tax dollars we pay to the township.
This tax increase is the second in the past three months, as township residents received a notice in February of an increase in the taxable value of their property.
Our elected officials will dispute the fact that this is a tax increase but instead call it a user fee.
They can try to spin it that way but it’s still a tax increase. You can also put lipstick on a pig but it’s still a pig.
The deadline to file as a candidate for the township board is only a few days away, Tuesday, May 13.
I urge township residents to not give these elected officials a free ride in the upcoming election. Now is the time to come forward and challenge these individuals by going to the township clerk’s office and submitting your name as a candidate for the township board.
Don’t let them get away with this decision to suck more of your hard earned money out of your pocket for a service that township residents should receive for the taxes we already pay.
