What really stood out was the Flivvers sweeping the 1600 and 3200-meter runs en route to a 71-66 decision at Mountaineer Stadium.
“The distance crews came through,” said Kingsford Coach Lisa Harry. “They ran hard and competed well.”
Teri Brown, Celeste Santi and Emily Lawton topped the 1600 while Santi, Lawton and Heather Pugh ruled in the 3200. Those runners accounted for 18 points.
Brown delivered another three points with an 800-meter runner-up.
Another big factor was the 400 relay with the Flivvers’ Katie Roell, Kendall Tadych, Kelsey Roberts and Jaime Roberts running a 52.84.
Jaime Roberts raised her school pole vault record from 9-feet-2 to 9-5 along with taking the 300 hurdles and 100 hurdles.
Kelsey Roberts took the high jump plus seconds in 100 and 200.
Molly Wiltzius, a discus winner by nearly 13 feet, tacked on the shot put.
Coach Rex Terwilliger’s Mountaineers challenged behind the likes of Kristin Nelson and Michaela Newberry.
Nelson copped the long jump and 400 in addition to anchoring the 1600 and 3200 relays. Newberry won the 100 and 200-meter dashes along with a leg of the 800 relay.
Mountaineers’ Emma Pontti captured the 800 and also ran on the winning 3200 and 1600 relays.
Kingsford’s boys, with Josh Droese rambling to three individual firsts and anchoring the 1600 relay, registered 83 points to Iron Mountain’s 54.
“Good meet,” summed up Flivver coach Chris Hofer.
Droese snared the 100, 400 and 200-meter dashes. Distance ace Jake Meeuwsen breezed in the 1600 and 3200.
Wes Jacobson picked up the 110 high hurdles and a second in low hurdles.
Three members of Coach Dale Powell’s Mountaineers each garnered an individual first and second — Ryan Pepin, 300 hurdles and 110 hurdles; Adam Gerhard, 800 and 1600, and Cole Smith, high jump and discus.
Hofer said a hamstring injury will sideline Ryan Kleisner from sprints and relays.
Flivver field events did account for 20 points, with firsts from Elliott Maraccini, pole vault, and Jason Barnes, high jump.
“We picked up a few points there (field events) but we still need a little more punch,” Hofer said.
Kingsford competes Saturday at Negaunee (girls) and Munising (boys). Iron Mountain rests until the Kingsford Invitational on Tuesday.
