Lockdown at Norway

Random search yields no drugs at Norway schools

POSTED: May 11, 2008

NORWAY — No drugs were found inside Norway High School and Vulcan Middle School after law enforcement agencies conducted a random canine search for illicit drugs on Friday.

Supt. Randall Van Gasse said no lockers were identified for search in the high school, but there was one in the middle school.

The result of that search did not produce any illegal substances.

“Not in the building,” Van Gasse said.

In addition to the buildings being searched, vehicles in the school parking lot were targeted by the dogs. Five citations are possibly pending as a result of the vehicle searches.

“They had to do with the vehicular search and parking lot search,” Van Gasse said.

Officers from Norway Police Department worked with school officials in planning the sweep which was conducted by canine units from Escanaba Public Safety and Delta County Sheriff.

Van Gasse said in the nine years he has been at the school, this is the first ever illegal drug search.

Dickinson County KIND Team assisted Norway Police with the school-wide lockdown.
