New scam in Iron River

June 17, 2008
The Daily News
IRON RIVER — The Michigan State Police at the Iron River Post are warning residents of a new telephone scam used to obtain money.

The scam consists of a person calling in an urgent, panicky manner, posing as a relative. The victim is told that the person is in Canada and customs will not let him/her back into the United States. The victim is then requested to send money via Western Union, MoneyGram, or other wire service.

After the money is wired, it cannot be recovered by authorities.

Before sending money, the State Police warn citizens to know who you are sending money to. Customs does not charge citizens to re-enter the United States.
