Memorial for shooting victims

By LISA M. HOFFMANN, Staff Writer
POSTED: August 26, 2008

KINGSFORD - A memorial for the victims of the East Kingsford train bridge shooting that occurred July 31 is in the making.

Organizers are seeking the help of experienced contractors to build a three-tier decking and billboards to support the memorial.

Norway Granite & Marble is donating a 4 foot long by 3 foot tall stone engraved with the four victims' names, a Bible scripture and a lighthouse.

Killed when a gunman opened fire at the train bridge over Menominee River were 17-year-old Tiffany Pohlson of Vulcan, 18-year-old Anthony Spigarelli of Iron Mountain and 19-year-old Bryan Mort of Iron Mountain. Twenty-year-old Daniel Gordon was wounded.

Organizers are hoping to locate the memorial near the Skidmore Drive entrance of the train bridge site in East Kingsford.

Experienced contractors willing to donate time or materials to build a concrete three-tier decking and billboards are needed.

A memorial fund for Mort, Pohlson and Spigarelli has been set up at First National Bank & Trust Co. of Iron Mountain-Kingsford for those who would like to donate to help pay for materials needed.

The account number is 35964.

I AGREE!! No reason to close the area. Ifanything they should improve the area, create a safer and wider path. The E.K. Bridge equals summer and freedom, the opportunity to be a young adult, maybe to be a little adventurous by daring to see who can jump off the top or who can go the highest on the rope swing. It is a beautiful and simple part of our town. I think the the unfortunate victims should also remembered with a beautiful, ever-lasting stone & brass plaque by the bride over looking the water & bridge, Something that will last as long as their families love and their memory. A reminder that one should never take a single moment for granted and that life is too short not to hang out with friends and maybe not take a dare to jump.

this is an awesome idea!!! i don't believe they are going to close it down...or it would probably be closed by now...my brother was just down there the other day with his friend looking at the site...so i don't think they will be closing it...plus dont they still use the train tracks for trains???

There is absolutely no reason to close this area! This is a nice area for people of all ages to go and enjoy the scenery. I live right there and have no problem with people going in and out as long as they respect the law. This act could have happened anywhere.
